Should you use a Company that Provides “Free” Websites? Everybody knows that there is no such thing as a free lunch. However, there are several companies on the Internet that promise free websites. Just Google the phrase “Free Websites” and you’ll find terms like “No programming knowledge required”, “Get a free website in 15 minutes”, “Create your own website for FREE” or “No HTML skills required” and so on. At this time let me take a minute to explain the marketing term “upsell”. To my knowledge there are no charitable organizations in the market that provide website builder tools. So NO COMPANY can provide you with the tools or services to build a website unless they have money to burn and want to burn it (I will leave it to you to guess the odds). For example, let’s take one of the most popular companies: www.Webs.com, which provides a free site. What do you get? A free website, yes. But one that has advertisements from the company’s sponsors all over the place. Too bad you would never know that unless you read the fine print. What’s more interesting is what you won’t get. You won’t get a custom domain name. So if you wanted a domain name such as www.yourcompany.com or www.yoursite.com, you would have to pay. Remember how I said there is no free lunch? And you get a storage capacity of 50MB. To put things in perspective, 1 song averages 4MB and a 5 minute video from iTunes averages 30MB. Again, you can take a guess as to how quickly you will be forced to make an upgrade to the paid plan. You wouldn’t know all this without having spent about 20-30 minutes analyzing the information on the Webs.com site. Moreover, if you spend your time building the content of your website on their website, you almost certainly are now tempted to use their premium (paid) service especially when you find out their free website don’t really do all the things a resourceful website needs. This is what I call ‘upselling’. Great strategy for a business, but not so much for a customer. So the next time you decide to use a free website service, make sure you do your homework. I suggest that you find a professional, affordable company that will design a real website that works. optimized to be found on search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. That’s a whole different topic unto itself, so I will leave that for another newsletter. |
How to Improve your Website’s Ranking Keywords, Keywords, Keywords – These are so important to achieving optimum online visibility. They are also the basis for your SEO. Make a list of all the keywords and phrases that potential customers might use to find your site. Include long and short tail keywords. Then prioritize. Ideally, you should optimize only one keyword per page. Your keywords should also be used in the page title, navigation, Meta tag and alt tags. Do onsite and offsite optimization. Onsite optimization includes all the things you do to make your site easy for search engines to understand, while offsite optimization helps to boost your inbound links and traffic. A good SEO plan uses both methods. For more information on Website Jungle’s best practices for SEO, visit our website. |
