When asked, “What do you feel are the most vital skills for a web designer to develop?” The most common answer was “communication skills.” Even though this is not strictly a design-related expertise, I was quite thrilled to hear those answers, since the feeling is mutual. Communication skills can truly make or break any design project that you are involved in, so thought I would throw more light on this topic. For ages, we thought people grasped what we were talking about, irrespective of the number of jargons we used. Not just about the desired result of the project, but to its release and post release as well. It is critical that all stakeholders on the client side have been included. This is written and signed off from its official commencement of the project. You have to be extremely proactive once the project has taken off to see the good and bad side of what went as planned and what did not, this helps us to improve. Here are a few ways to help bridge the communication gap between the designer and the client: Research and planning It is a lot tougher to put together a proposal for a client without having the entire web project understood. The only way to gain insight into a website development project is to have a full understanding of the business and marketing mediums of the client. There is no other way to do this but to ask questions and do research. Make sure you include research on the client’s existing site and also similar sites in their industry. So when we have produced a proposal we have a complete timeline and pathway to designing our client’s new website. We understand the client’s business models and we acknowledge the end result the client is looking for. Design equals client service Irrespective of the work, clients will always need communication between the service provider and the client, and web design is no exception. As a client service, there is plenty of back and forth communication for the client to the designer. There will be very few design projects that will allow you to go work on your own and then present a finished product to a client without much communication in during the process. For a web designer, coding and creativity are a part of the everyday work, as is communication.
