There are a lot of companies that position themselves as SEO experts, however, not all SEO tactics are good ones that you should adopt. While some SEO tactics are detrimental or simply a waste of time, there are some best practices. Here our SEO experts take a look at some of the common SEO myths and let you in on what’s right and what’s wrong for your site. 1) Meta descriptions will boost your search rankings. FALSE While Meta descriptions are beneficial for users to get a quick overview of what’s your site is about, Google and Bing no longer index Meta descriptions as part of your site’s overall SERP. 2) The more links you have back to your site, the better. FALSE Link building has really evolved. Whereas businesses used to implement “link farm” techniques to generate a high quantity of inbound links to their websites, Google has cracked down big on this practice. The search giant now not only looks more favorably on quality of links than quantity, it actually penalizes sites that have spam links pointing to them. 3) Keyword rich domains are better than those without. NOT NECESSARILY It’s true that using your keywords on your site will help your search ranking, but having them in your URL doesn’t necessarily mean that Google will think your site is a subject matter expert within your industry. 4) Websites must still be submitted to search engines when they are new. NOT NECESSARILY When a new website was launched 10 years ago, it was common practice to submit the site to major search engines in order to start getting indexed. Now, Google pretty much picks up on anything that has a link. Today submitting to major search engines won’t hurt you, but it’s won’t really help either. 5) Websites with animation are bad for SEO. FALSE Flash used to be a major red flag for website developers. However, using Flash won’t do anything to harm your SEO rankings. In fact, Flash animation and video that has the relevant description paired with it can actually perform better in terms of SEO. If you are looking at creating a website with a major animation component, thankfully, today there are alternatives to Flash – such as HTML5 and Silverlight, both of which can be indexed by search engines. 6) Duplicate content is bad for your site. FALSE Many SEO writers will tell you that having the same content on multiple pages of your site is a no-no. However this duplicate content doesn’t really have any effect on your site. Search engines won’t look at it and see more keywords that will improve your site, nor will they penalize you. It’s pretty much a wash. Website Jungle has been doing good clean SEO for over a decade.
